South
Shore Trail
October 24
Meandering a bluff on the southern shore of the lake at Shawnee Mission Park,
the South Shore Trail is a treasure in the midst of suburbia. The entire three-mile
route is wooded and very rugged. Hiker's will find boots and trekking poles helpful
to navigate slick rocks and uneven terrain. In some places railroad ties have
been used to prevent erosion and create steps. In other areas, you will find
yourself ascending rocky inclines. During fall, the leaves are thin enough to
allow generous views of the sparkling lake below. Plenty of spur trails lead
to the edge of the bluff for lake views. Spur trails can also cause some confusion
and lead you astray. The trail passes through an area designated for a dog park.
Two gates are used to keep dogs inside--not to keep people out. To stay on the
trail, you must pass through the gates.
If you are short on time, begin at the east end, which is slightly more scenic.
Hikers are treated to aerial views of the canoe trail and wetland area below.
Children often play in the inlet creeks. Benches have been placed along the trail,
but there are no other amenities. Restrooms and picnic tables can be found at
each end of the trail (although, there is no water in winter.) Unless you plan
a shuttle, you must retrace your steps. Allow 2.5 to 3 hours to complete the
6-mile route. Trailheads are located at shelter #8 and at shelter #10 (also the
Walnut Grove picnic area.)
Shawnee Mission Park is in Lenexa at 79th and Renner, west of I-435. Pick up
maps at the Visitor Center, or find them online at www.jcprd.com.
